MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $150,000 grant to provide road improvements that will lead to a new restaurant and additional jobs in the Marshall County city of Arab.
The Community Development Block Grant will fund the construction of a deceleration lane on North Brindlee Mountain Parkway (U.S. Highway 231) where a new Zaxby’s is being built. The fast-food business will create 10 full-time and 30 part-time jobs.
“My administration is dedicated to economic growth in Alabama, and the Community Development Block Grant program creates a way for the state to help local communities provide the infrastructure necessary for new businesses to locate in an area” Ivey said. “I am pleased to award this grant to support local leaders with this project, and I am glad to see new business coming to Arab.”
The deceleration lane, which will be 330 feet long, is required by the state Department of Transportation due to the traffic speed in the area. It will allow for safe turning when exiting the highway.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“Gov. Ivey has continually shown her commitment to growing Alabama’s economy, and ADECA is pleased to be able to assist and support that commitment through the Community Development Block Grant program,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.
ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation development.
Ivey notified Mayor Robert Joslin that the grant had been approved.
