MONTGOMERY— A $524,660 grant awarded by Gov. Kay Ivey will take health care to a new level in southwest Alabama while providing new jobs.

The Community Development Block Grant, awarded to the city of Thomasville, will provide infrastructure necessary for a new hospital. The Thomasville Regional Medical Center, already under construction, will be a 29-bed facility that will serve people in northern Clarke County and several surrounding counties. It will employ 65 people and will involve a wide range of jobs from medical professionals to food service workers.

“Improving job opportunities and access to quality healthcare in rural Alabama remain among my top priorities,” Ivey said. “This grant is a perfect example of state government working with local communities to meet their needs in multiple ways. Due to the funds provided in this Community Development Block Grant, the people of Thomasville, and all of Clarke County, will now have increased access to both new jobs and improved healthcare.”

CDBG funds will be used to supply water and sewer services to the hospital which is being built off U.S. Highway 43. The city has pledged $131,165 in local funds for the infrastructure project.

Thomasville Regional Medical Center is being built on part of a 35-acre complex where there is the potential that other medical-related businesses may locate. Thomasville has been without a hospital since 2011 when another facility closed.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“Gov. Kay Ivey is aware of the importance of accessibility to professional medical services in rural communities,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to partner with Gov. Ivey and the city of Thomasville in making this project a reality.” Ivey notified Mayor Sheldon Day that the grant had been approved.

ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
