MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $125,666 grant to support a nonprofit agency that assists victims of abuse in northwest Alabama.
One Place of the Shoals is using grant funds to offer free professional assistance to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and elder abuse in Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Marion and Winston counties. The organization provides counseling, victim advocacy, court accompaniment, legal advocacy and assistance with filing protection for abuse orders. A portion of the grant supports travel so staff can provide direct services to victims in their community.
“One Place of the Shoals serves a valuable purpose for the community by providing a place where victims may access a variety of professional services and assistance under one roof,” Ivey said. “I commend the work of the staff and volunteers who have committed to helping victims through the most challenging times of their lives.”
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice.
“Gov. Ivey understands that those who have unfortunately become victims of abuse need and deserve access to professional services,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “This partnership between the governor, ADECA and One Place will ensure victims in the area continue to have access to these important services.”
ADECA manages a wide array of programs that support law enforcement and traffic safety, energy conservation, water resource management, economic development and recreation.
