Gov. Ivey awards grant for urgent sewer repair in Headland

MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $100,000 Community Development Block Grant for an urgently needed sewer repair in the city of Headland.

Per city officials, a sewer line collapsed in February 2017 causing a backup in the areas around Myrick and Peachtree streets. After an initial repair, officials said the pipe collapsed again due to deterioration. A temporary fix is in place, but the grant funding will help provide a long-term fix that alleviates the health and safety hazards of sewage backups in residential and business areas.

“The health and safety of Alabama residents is of utmost importance, and the Community Development Block Grant program is able to help with these types of issues that might take more funds than communities have available at a given time,” Ivey said. “I am pleased to help Headland with this project to bring a long-term solution to this problem.”

The grant will fund the construction of a new pump station, approximately 1,200 feet of new 3-inch sewer line and some areas of 8-inch gravity sewer line as needed. Officials say the upgrades will have a useful life of at least 50 years.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.

“The CDBG program is an important tool to help communities resolve health and safety issues that can suddenly arise and be costly to repair,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in helping the city of Headland solve this sewer issue.”

Ivey notified Mayor Ray Marler that the grant had been approved. Local matching funds of $88,595 will supplement the award.
