Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $190,422 grant to help create new jobs in Bridgeport. The Community Development Block Grant funds will provide infrastructure needed for Mohawk Industries to reopen a fiber mill that closed in March. Mohawk plans to hire 65 people.

“Job creation continues to be a top priority of my administration,” Ivey said. “Mohawk is a widely recognized name in the flooring industry, and I am delighted the company is investing in Bridgeport and Jackson County and providing job opportunities for our citizens. This project is a great example of what can be accomplished when everyone works together to address a community need.”

The company is planning to renovate and upgrade the existing facility to make it more productive. Improved access to city water, funded through the ADECA grant, is part of the planned improvements.

Mohawk will use the facility to produce fiber used in manufacturing carpet and rugs. The company has also diversified to produce other flooring products made of ceramic tile, laminate, wood, stone and vinyl.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“I share in Gov. Ivey’s support of this project that will provide jobs for Alabamians, and that the people of Bridgeport will see a once vibrant building spring back to life,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “I am proud of the partnership that ADECA has formed across Alabama that allows us to be a part of the governor’s vision for job creation.”

Ivey notified Mayor David Hughes that the grant had been approved. The city is providing $47,606 in local funds for the project.

ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
