MONTGOMERY—Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $194,711 grant to help ensure that victims of domestic violence and their children have access to professional care and services.
The grant will help the YWCA Central Alabama continue offering temporary shelter and other support for victims of domestic violence in Blount, Jefferson and St. Clair counties while also funding travel for personnel to travel to and from satellite offices, different agencies and county courts to assist victims.
“Those who’ve been victimized by domestic violence should have access to professional and compassionate care,” Ivey said. “I commend YWCA Central Alabama for the work the organization continues to do to help those in need.”
YWCA Central Alabama also provides court advocacy, case management, legal representation, support groups and outreach and awareness services for victims and their children.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA manages a wide array of programs that support law enforcement and traffic safety, energy conservation, water resource management, economic development and recreation.
“The staff of YWCA works diligently to help those who have suffered from abuse find justice and take steps toward recovery,” ADECA Director Jim Byard Jr. said. “ADECA’s partnership with YWCA will ensure that the free, professional assistance offered by the organization will continue to remain available for all who need it.”
Ivey notified YWCA Central Alabama CEO Yolanda Sullivan that she had approved the grant. Matching funds of $48,678 will supplement the grant.
