Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a grant to help the Fultondale Police Department purchase equipment to enhance the department’s ability to gather evidence.
The department will use the $17,505 grant to purchase a digital fingerprint scanner called LiveScan. The system is a fingerprint scanner that replaces the process of recording suspects’ fingerprints using ink. Because the fingerprints are scanned, they are stored and transmitted to state and federal criminal databases electronically, saving time.
“At any time, officers of the Fultondale Police Department may be called upon to risk their lives to protect the city’s residents,” Ivey said. “I am pleased to help them acquire new technology to perform their duties more effectively.”
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant fund.
“Through this grant program, ADECA partners with Fultondale and dozens of other cities, towns and counties across Alabama each year to help them purchase the equipment vital to the local law enforcement agencies that protect our communities,” ADECA Director Jim Byard Jr. said.
ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
Ivey notified Mayor Jim Lowery that she had approved the grant.
