MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded grants to support victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in five east Alabama counties.

Bentley awarded a $19,421 grant to the Domestic Violence Intervention Center to provide shelter, support groups, transitional housing and other assistance to domestic violence victims in Chambers, Lee, Macon, Randolph and Tallapoosa counties. A $13,429 grant will help Rape Counselors of East Alabama assist sexual assault victims in Chambers, Lee, Macon and Tallapoosa counties.

“The road to recovery can be long for those who have suffered from abuse, but professional assistance can go a long way in helping victims take the first steps,” Bentley said. “I commend the staffs and volunteers of the Domestic Violence Intervention Center and Rape Counselors for the compassionate care they provide to those needing assistance.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Justice Department. ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.

“Those fleeing from abusive situations need and deserve a safe place to turn for free professional assistance,” ADECA Director Jim Byard Jr. said. “Through ADECA’s partnerships with these two organizations, we are helping to ensure that abuse survivors in the area will continue to have access to that kind of assistance.”

Bentley informed Chippewa Thomas of the Domestic Violence Intervention Center and Steve Martin of Rape Counselors of East Alabama that he had approved the grants.
