MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded a $31,021 grant to the Crenshaw County Commission to help the Sheriff’s Office continue the services of a full-time domestic violence investigator.
A deputy is assigned to investigate all domestic violence crimes in the county. The deputy also holds meetings to educate victims and potential victims about signs of abuse and make them aware of medical treatment, legal aid and other assistance available.
“Domestic violence is a serious crime that cannot be tolerated,” Bentley said. “I commend Crenshaw County’s efforts to help victims attain the justice they deserve and find additional assistance to help them overcome the trauma of abuse.”
The investigator works closely with the Family Sunshine Center and Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence to provide assistance, protection and counseling to victims.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Justice Department. ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
“Domestic violence takes a physical and emotional toll on victims and damages families,” ADECA Director Jim Byard Jr. said. “ADECA works with specialized domestic violence crime units across the state to assist victims. I commend the work of the Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office to help obtain justice for the victims of these senseless crimes in the county.”
Bentley notified County Commission Chairman Charlie Sankey Jr. that the grant had been approved.
