Gov. Robert Bentley has announced a $43,400 grant for a program to ready Franklin County high students for rewarding careers in the high-demand health-care field.

Funds from the Appalachian Regional Commission will establish the patient care technician training program that will provide a foundation for students interested in immediately entering a basic health-care field after graduation or using that education as a springboard for pursuing more technical medical careers.

“This program will provide the foundation from which students can propel themselves to numerous challenging health-care and medical careers depending on their ambitions and goals,” Bentley said. “I encourage students to begin an early pursuit of potential occupations to help them reach their potential.”

The funds will purchase equipment and supplies needed to establish the program. Students who complete the training program should be able to pass a basic patient care technician exam and immediately enter the health-care workforce if desired. The potential for immediate employment exists locally in clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes and assisted living facilities, according to school officials.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs manages the ARC program in Alabama.

“Equipping our students with the training, tools and knowledge they need to go out and make a good living for themselves and contribute to the well-being of their communities is important to helping Alabama prosper,” ADECA Director Jim Byard Jr. said. “I am proud of the partnerships ADECA has built that result in programs like this one being established in Franklin County.”

A local match of $18,600 is being added to the funding.

ARC is an economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments. The agency’s mission is to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in Appalachia to help the Region achieve socioeconomic parity with the nation.

ADECA manages a range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
