MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded a $250,000 Community Development Block Grant to replace dilapidated water mains in the town of Ardmore.

The Limestone County town will replace deteriorating and breaking water mains along 4th and 6th streets, 2nd and 3rd avenues, Gatlin Drive and Ardmore Ave. According to town officials, the current 2.25-inch lines have low pressure and poor water quality.

“Community Development Block Grants are an excellent way of helping smaller communities like Ardmore improve the quality of life for local residents,” Bentley said. “I commend the local leadership for their work in getting these water system upgrades to those who are most in need.”

The upgrades involve installing 2,700 feet of new 6-inch PVC water mains and replacing 8,000 feet of old 2.25-inch water mains with higher capacity 6-inch water mains. Four new fire hydrants also will be installed in the serviced area.

The Alabama Department of Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“The Community Development Block Grant program is one of the best examples of how ADECA works with local leaders on projects to improve the lives of residents,” ADECA Director Jim Byard Jr. said. “This year, ADECA received 108 applications for projects that support economic and community development. We were able to award 54 projects totaling $17.5 million in investments.  I am proud of the projects chosen this year, especially this project to benefit the residents of Ardmore.”

ADECA administers an array of programs that support law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
Bentley notified Mayor Billy Shannon that he had approved the grant. The town is contributing $75,000 in matching funds.
