MONTGOMERY– Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded a $4,695 grant to the city of Leeds for police equipment.
The funds will enable the city to purchase body cameras worn by officers while out on patrol. The cameras record interactions with the public, and the footage can be used as evidence in court or as a training tool.
“The contributions and sacrifices made by our law enforcement officers are immeasurable, and it is important they have adequate equipment to do their jobs effectively,” Bentley said. “I am pleased that we can help Leeds purchase these new cameras for officers.”
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation.
“Each year, ADECA partners with police departments across Alabama to help obtain new and needed equipment,” ADECA Director Jim Byard said. “Public safety is important to every Alabamian, and these new cameras will help Leeds police officers out on patrol protecting the city.”
Bentley notified Mayor David Miller that the grant had been approved.
