MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded a $62,607 grant to assist with the investigation and prosecution of domestic violence cases in Etowah County.
The Etowah County Commission is using grant funds to support the Sheriff’s Office’s Domestic Violence Unit. Personnel with the unit investigate cases involving domestic violence and sexual assault in the county and aid in the prosecution of those cases. The unit also trains area law enforcement officers on how to enforce protection orders and how to spot signs of abuse.
“Domestic abuse leaves lasting effects on victims and their loved ones,” Bentley said. “I commend the efforts of the Domestic Violence Unit to help those who have suffered from abuse find justice.”
Local matching funds of $20,869 are supplementing the grant.
Bentley notified Sherrie Kelley, Etowah County Commission chief administration officer, that the grant had been approved.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is managing the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resource management, job training and career development.
