MONTGOMERY — Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded grants totaling $94,798 to help ensure that abuse victims in 13 Alabama counties have access to professional care and services.

The grants will help three nonprofit organizations continue offering temporary shelter and other support for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

“Victims should have access to compassionate and professional care,” Bentley said. “I commend the staffs and volunteers of these organizations for providing needed services.”

The Lighthouse Counseling Center in Montgomery will use two grants totaling $57,073 to assist victims in Autauga, Butler, Crenshaw, Dallas, Elmore, Lowndes, Montgomery, Perry and Wilcox counties through its Standing Together Against Rape program. The program uses volunteer registered nurses who are specially trained to care for assault victims and collect evidence. They conduct exams in a private facility to spare victims the stress of visiting a hospital emergency room where privacy may be limited and wait times can be lengthy.

The Montgomery Area Family Violence Program’s Family Sunshine Center will use a $24,225 grant to support its 24-hour family violence hotline, crisis intervention services and shelter for victims in Autauga, Butler, Chilton, Crenshaw, Elmore, Lowndes and Montgomery counties.

The Selma and Blackbelt Regional Abuse Sanctuary is using a $13,500 grant to offer emergency shelter for victims in Dallas, Perry, Wilcox, Marengo, Sumter and Greene Counties.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA manages a wide array of programs that support law enforcement and traffic safety, energy conservation, water resource management, economic development and recreation.
