MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded grants totaling $8,898 to help the city of Bayou La Batre purchase computer equipment for the police department.

Grant funding is being used to purchase 12 laptop computers and related software for patrol cars. City officials say the laptops give officers a quicker and more effective means of issuing citations.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, and water resources.

Bentley notified Mayor Annette Johnson that the grants had been approved.
