MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded Community Development Block Grants to improve services for residents in the city of Fayette and in Fayette County’s Pea Ridge community. Bentley announced the grants while visiting Fayette County today.
“Community Development Block Grants are an important tool to help local governments undertake projects that improve the quality of life,” Bentley said. “I am pleased to assist leaders in Fayette County to complete projects that will improve services for residents.”
The city of Fayette will use a $450,000 grant to replace deteriorated sewer lines that serve 336 residents in the Third Avenue NE neighborhood. The deteriorated lines have caused raw sewage to overflow into yards and ditches. The project will replace 15,900 feet of sewer lines with PVC pipe and replace 30 manholes. The city is contributing $666,100 in matching funds to the grant.
With a $264,000 grant, Fayette County will extend water service to 25 homes in the Pea Ridge community. Residents currently rely on private wells, many of which have become contaminated or are running dry, county officials said. The project includes the installation of 42,100 feet of PVC water lines and five new fire hydrants in an area within sections of Frozen Hollow, Wolf Creek, Feltman and Pea Ridge roads as well as Alabama Highway 102. The county is contributing $27,000 in matching funds.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. ADECA administers an array of programs that support law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development.
