MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley announced a $60,000 Appalachian Regional Commission grant that will assist the Tuskegee-Macon County Community Development Corporation in creating a plan to attract visitors to the county, resulting in more commerce.

The plan will be compiled by analyzing an inventory of all local attractions, landmarks and assets and surveying visitors to the county to determine their satisfaction levels.

“Attracting additional tourism to such a historically important part of the state is a great way to improve a community,” Bentley said. “This grant will help local leader to formulate an effective strategy for generating greater interest in the Tuskegee-Macon area.”

TMCDC is partnering with the Tuskegee Area Chamber of Commerce and the Tuskegee University Student Government Association to launch a community-wide/campus-wide campaign to emphasize tourism as a major priority and promote positive community spirit. TMCDC is providing $15,000 in matching funds for the project.

Congress established the ARC in 1965 as a supplemental grant program to raise the standard of living, improve the quality of life and promote economic development in the Appalachian mountain region, which includes Macon and 36 other Alabama counties.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs administers the ARC program in Alabama along with a wide range of other programs that support law enforcement, economic development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
