Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded a $200,000 grant enabling the construction of a health-care facility in Sumiton that will hire 25 new workers when completed.
The Community Development Block Grant awarded to the city of Sumiton will provide infrastructure improvements necessary for Northwest Alabama Mental Health Center to construct a 10,000-square-foot building. The public nonprofit company, based in Jasper, provides mental and physical health services for residents in Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker and Winston counties.
“This facility will improve the delivery of health services and also will offer additional job opportunities,” Bentley said. “I am pleased to assist with this important project.”
Sumiton will use the CDBG funding to expand sewer services for the center’s new location on a 20-acre site off Hull Road. Officials say the expanded infrastructure could encourage other businesses to locate in the area and create more jobs in the future.
Bentley notified Mayor Petey Ellis that the grant had been approved. The city has pledged $150,000 in funding for the project.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resources, job training and career development.
