Gov. Robert Bentley has announced a $50,000 grant that will upgrade an electrical training program at the Fayette campus of Bevill State Community College.

The school is constructing a permanent facility for the program and will use funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission to provide advanced training equipment. The new facility will include a modern laboratory that will provide students with the most up-to-date tools and techniques in the field.

The program will train students preparing for careers and adults who are seeking new careers or retraining.Training will eventually be offered to area high school students who want to enter the electronics profession.

“Expanding job opportunities is the top priority of my administration, and today’s jobs require a capable, well-trained workforce,” Bentley said. “This program will provide training in the high-demand field of operating and servicing electrical systems.”

Bentley notified Dr. Anne McNutt, president of Bevill State, that the grant had been approved.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs administers the ARC program along with a wide range of other programs that support law enforcement, economic development, workforce development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.

Congress established the ARC in 1965 as a supplemental grant program to raise the standard of living, improve the quality of life and promote economic development in portions of the 13 Appalachian mountain states.

Thirty-seven Alabama counties, including Fayette County, are part of the ARC area. One of ARC’s goals is to improve workforce training in areas where skilled employees are in demand.
