MONTGOMERY – A nonprofit organization that helps domestic violence victims is getting some funding assistance in the form of a $54,119 grant awarded by Gov. Robert Bentley.
The grant to the Crisis Center of Russell County will enable the center to continue serving victims by providing safe shelter and support services.
“No one should have to live with abuse and violence,” said Bentley. “I commend the center’s staff for their dedication to assisting victims and providing a refuge from danger.”
The organization, which opened in April 1991, provides safe shelter, counseling, transportation and essentials such as food and clothing to victims who are escaping violence. The staff also assists in obtaining protective orders when necessary.
Along with grants, the center relies on local donations to continue its services.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Bentley notified Valerie McClain, the center’s executive director, that the grant had been approved. Matching funds of $13,529 will supplement the award.
