MONTGOMERY— The police departments of Childersburg and Sylacauga will soon obtain new equipment with the help of grants totaling $12,528 awarded by Gov. Robert Bentley.

Childersburg will use a $9,000 grant to purchase 15 tablet computers, portable printers and related equipment for patrol vehicles. The equipment will enable officers to quickly access important information and databases when making a traffic stop. Officers also will be able to file reports and issue citations electronically, saving time during their patrol shifts.

Sylacauga will use a $3,528 grant to obtain new digital radar units for patrol vehicles enabling officers to better enforce traffic safety laws, police officials said.

“Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every time they are on duty protecting our communities,” Bentley said. “I am pleased to assist Childersburg and Sylacauga in purchasing this equipment that will help their officers perform their duties safely and efficiently.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Justice Department. ADECA administers an array of programs supporting law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, workforce development, water resource management and recreation development.

“These grants are a continuation of ADECA’s strong partnership with Childersburg, Sylacauga and other law enforcement agencies across Alabama,” ADECA Director Jim Byard Jr. said. "ADECA supports law enforcement officers because they make our communities stronger by keeping Alabama citizens safe. I am pleased to support these grants because I believe they will help improve the daily mission of police officers.”
