MONTGOMERY—A partnership between the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and Jacksonville State University’s Center for Applied Forensics is providing valuable training and tools for smaller law enforcement agencies across Alabama.
The center is hosting multiple training events to help police and sheriffs’ departments reduce the number of backlogged reports by improving the quality and timeliness of forensic evidence collected at the crime scenes, especially DNA evidence.
A $35,671 grant awarded by Gov. Robert Bentley and administered by ADECA’s Law Enforcement and Traffic Safety Division is helping the center to fund the training and provide evidence collection kits at no-cost to participating law enforcement agencies.
“Proper handling of crime scene forensics greatly enhances the criminal justice system’s ability to close more criminal cases and prosecute those responsible for crimes in a timely manner,” Bentley said. “I am pleased to assist these efforts to enhance the abilities of our law enforcement officers in collecting forensic evidence.”
Officers from 14 law enforcement agencies recently attended the first training session in Anniston. The participating departments took home a crime scene kit, covered by the grant funds, which contains multiple items to make collecting forensic evidence easier, more efficient and more accurate, officials said.
The next session will be at Jacksonville State’s Little River Canyon Center in Ft. Payne on a date to be announced soon. Two additional sessions will be held in the southern part of the state. As dates and locations are set, they will be posted under the training tab at www.jsu.edu/forensics.
ADECA is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. In addition to law enforcement support, ADECA manages a wide range of programs that aid economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resources, job training and career development.
