MONTGOMERY— You might say that the town of Wadley hit a home run with a $50,000 grant announced by Gov. Bob Riley to improve the Wadley Sports Complex.
The current complex has two ball fields, but the facility is not sufficient to accommodate everyone who wants to play. City officials say that approximately 100 youth must travel to Roanoke to play sports due to Wadley’s limited facilities.
The funding will help the town reorient the current fields and construct a third. The new layout will create a cloverleaf pattern with the concession stands toward the center.
“Sports and outdoor recreational facilities help unite communities, strengthen families and encourage youth to get outside and exercise,” said Riley.
A100-space parking lot will be included in the upgrades.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant.
Funding was made available to the state by the Land and Water Conservation Fund, a federal program created by Congress in 1965 to assist states in developing recreational facilities. The first field built at the Wadley Sports Complex was funded by the LWCF program in the 1970s.
Riley notified Wadley Mayor Jim Dabbs that the grant had been approved. The town will provide the required 50 percent match of $50,000 for the project.
