MONTGOMERY— Gov. Bob Riley has awarded a $265,000 economic stimulus grant to support efforts to combat illegal drugs in Walker County.
The grant will enable the county’s Narcotics Enforcement Team to continue investigating, arresting, prosecuting and incarcerating drug offenders.
“Cooperation among many law enforcement agencies is required to effectively address the threat of illegal drugs,” said Riley. “I commend the Narcotics Enforcement Team for their dedication to the safety of Walker County residents.”
The team utilizes personnel from the county sheriff’s department, the district attorney’s office and the Jasper Police Department.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Riley notified County Commission Chairman Bruce Hamrick that the grant had been approved.
