MONTGOMERY— Three organizations that assist domestic violence victims are receiving additional funding from economic stimulus grants awarded by Gov. Bob Riley. The grants, which supplement previous awards, will help the organizations serve victims in 13 counties in central and east Alabama.

A $59,075 grant will help the Family Sunshine Center in Montgomery continue to serve victims in Autauga, Butler, Chilton, Crenshaw, Elmore, Lowndes and Montgomery counties.

The Domestic Violence Intervention Center in Opelika will use a $13,278 grant to continue serving victims in Chambers, Lee, Macon, Randolph and Tallapoosa counties.

A grant of $9,473 will help the Crisis Center of Russell County in Phenix City continue serving victims in Russell County.

“These non-profit organizations provide vital services to domestic violence victims,” said Riley. “While grants are important, private contributions and support from area residents are essential to the continued operation of these programs.”

The centers provide services such as 24-hour crisis lines, emergency shelter, counseling and court advocacy to victims and their children.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Justice as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that was signed by President Obama earlier this year.

Riley notified Charlene Holtsford of the Family Sunshine Center, Tom O’Shea of the Domestic Violence Intervention Center and Valerie McLain of the Crisis Center of Russell County that the grants had been approved.
