MONTGOMERY— A Selma-based organization will give its shelter for domestic violence victims some needed sprucing up with the help of an $18,121 economic stimulus grant from Gov. Bob Riley.
The grant will enable the Selma and Black Belt Regional Abuse Sanctuary, or SABRA, to replace worn-out furnishings so the emergency shelter can offer a more comfortable environment for victims and their children in Dallas, Perry and Wilcox counties. SABRA also will purchase new office equipment to help staff members better serve victims’ needs. The organization will use a portion of the funding to expand awareness about the shelter.
“Victims escaping abusive situations deserve efficient, professional service in a comfortable environment,” Riley said. “I am pleased to help SABRA update its equipment and furnishings.”
SABRA officials say the organization has been unable to purchase new equipment because of funding cuts during the past few years. The center will purchase new mattresses, pillows, bed frames and dressers to replace broken or worn items that are 15 years old. The organization also plans to purchase new televisions, cookware and trash cans for the shelter.
A portion of the funds will purchase new computers and software for four staff members. The computers will replace out-of-date models purchased in 2000 and 2002. The organization will print and distribute 2,000 brochures throughout the area to increase awareness of its services.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Justice Department as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed by President Obama earlier this year.
Riley informed Steve Smitherman, chairman of the organization’s board, that the grant had been approved. Matching funds of $4,530 are supplementing the award.
